Surround Yourself With Good People
Who Are You Spending Most of Your Time With?
Take a minute and think about who you are spending time with. Do they make you a better person? Do they push you, encourage you, tell you when you are wrong? Are they generally positive? Most of us are influenced greatly by the people we spend the most time with.
Refuse (when you can) to hang out with negative people. I feel my energy being sucked out of my veins when someone I am around is wallowing in self-pity, complaining about everything and finding something wrong in every situation. It is depressing, frustrating and can usually be avoided. However, you may not be able to completely avoid negative people. In fact, you may work with one or have one or two in your family. You can however, let that person know that you do not want to take part in their negativity.
Don’t allow negativity around you. I had a student in the past that came into the classroom and complained constantly, about everything. It was extremely draining and discouraging for me and the other students. I had no formal training on how to handle him so I created a solution.
I made a rule. Complaining and negativity were not allowed in my classroom. Every time the student would start spiraling I would stop it and ask if what was going to be said was going to be positive. The student would stop and be silent until they had something more positive to say.
Within a few months, that same student became one of my favorite students. The whole class (including myself) learned to be more positive and look at the good in life.
I couldn’t just decide not to be a teacher to this student. It isn’t up to you to fire your negative coworker or just stop being a relative to your negative relative. Sometimes you have to figure out a way to make it work and it could end up being a life changing experience for both of you.
When you start a side business or try anything new for that matter, you need support! Surround yourself with people that you can learn from. Find someone that has their own business. Read blogs and books and listen to podcasts. Find “glass half-full” kind of people to be around. The best way to find these people is to be one yourself.
So, let go of those negative thoughts and feelings, be encouraging to those around you, and find the beauty in every situation.
