Four Reasons Why You Should Pick Up a Book

I HATED reading growing up.

How I got through high school and most of college without reading a single book, I still don’t know. Unfortunately, now I realize how much I missed out on. Reading opens up a whole new world. I remember the first book I read cover to cover was my college Speechmaking textbook. Why would I be willing to read a textbook but fall asleep when trying to read Harry Potter or Twilight… Well I believe that everyone has their own purpose for reading and mine is number 2.

1. Read to Escape Reality – Reading should be relaxing and enjoyable. We all need to take a few minutes to escape our minds, issues, worries and concerns and enter someone else’s world. Many of my friends enjoy the Twilight series for this reason.

2. Read to better Yourself – Self-development can take your life from dull and average to exciting and evolving! The more you learn about yourself, the better you can handle yourself in different situations. The more you learn how to improve yourself and your life, the happier you will be. We are all striving for happiness right?! Well then, this might just be your key to success. My favorite self-development book is Crystal Paine’s Money Making Mom.

3. Read to Overcome Feelings of Loneliness – Whether we are alone or not, sometimes we just crave the company of other like-minded people, or we want to feel like we are a part of another community. Remember my post on surrounding yourself with good people? Well, it just so happens that authors are people and if you read good books, well then you are (in a way) surrounding yourself with good people. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Simon and Schuster is a great book about being a person others enjoy being around and doing business with.

4. Read to Gain as Much Knowledge as Possible – There is more knowledge available in this world than any one person could ever consume. Do you want to learn how to garden, start your own business, write a book, learn more about astronomy? Well there is a book for just about every subject you can think of. Maybe you will find your hidden talent after reading a book about magic. I wanted to learn more about social media marketing so I am currently reading Jab Jab Jab Right Hook by Harper Business. (I will let you know how it is when I finish reading it.)
